What the Hell is going on? Barbaric bull torture condoned by Canadian Organic Producers

Former Prime Minister of Canada, Pierre Trudeau once quipped that "the state has no business in the bedrooms of the nation". While that may be true between consenting adults in the "bedroom" it can not be used to justify the "states" turning a blind eye on the activities behind closed doors in the barns of Canada, both "organic" and "conventional".   Yes, it is true that male farm animals on "Canadian certified organic farms" may be subjected to un-anesthetized electroejaculation for bull "breeding soundness examinations (BSE)" and to collect semen for Artificial Insemination (AI).  It is also common for organic producers to use "commercial" non organic artificial insemination companies who's semen supply is garnered from "electroejaculating" bulls.

Dave Konrad of QAI Inc. (a organic certifying company) commenting on the Canadian Organic Production Systems standards states  "First of all, regarding electrical stimulation for bovine semen collection, the standard does not specifically address this practice. However, bulls used for breeding cattle [on Canadian certified Organic farms] do not have to be organic animals, and artificial insemination is allowed. Therefore, I would think that the method of collecting semen is outside the scope of this standard."

What is absolutely astounding about this is the fact that these same Canadian Organic Production Systems standards - section 6.6 Transport and Handling prohibits the use of electric livestock prods, BUT says absolutely nothing about the practise of bull electroejaculation.  A shock from a electric prod is "not nice" but it is insignifigant compared to the pain and stress caused by electroejaculation - Would someone please, for once just Ask the Bull!  Is it possible that, just because few folk know about the hidden behind closed barn doors practise of electroejaculation of bulls the organics regulatory folk think it best to look the other way! -  sure looks like the "stick your head up your you know where approach"!


Electroejaculation involves placement of a bipolar electrode over the males accessory glands by way of the rectum; this method is a "fast and operator convenient" (translation ~ cheap and dirty!) alternative to the artificial vagina method of semen collection. Professional AI services generally collect semen from bulls twice a week.

Electroejaculation of bulls has been proven to cause extreme pain when used as intended. Studies have shown that blood Cortisol and progesterone concentrations (stress response indicators) were significantly elevated after electroejaculation. All this says nothing about the "potential" misuse by operators in the "turning up of the voltage and current as punishment" should the bull be "non-compliant" or "not able".

Maybe the user instructions for Electroejaculator will assist in clarifying how barbaric this implement is!

- The electrodes should face ventral

- Some bulls do not respond well and some bulls go down with the stimulation. [cowboss has been around many bulls in his life, it take a lot of force or pain for a bull to go "down"]

- The technique is one of a gradual build-up of electrical stimulation until the bull has an erection, protrusion of the penis and ejaculation.

- Some machines are manually operated and some are pre programmed to deliver the correct stimuli.

- You start with a low 'power' setting and then work the 'power' up until erection, protrusion and ejaculation. [Wow - just how far do you go with this? Maybe when it starts to smell like a BBQ, would that be a good time to stop?]

The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association makes "reassuring" statements like "

The innovations of longitudinal electrodes (as opposed to ring electrodes), epidural aneasthesia, sedation, and programmed controls have shown promise in making EEJ a less distressful experience, based on plasma cortisol and aversion studies."

Translation ~ It hurts like hell!


Electroejaculation must be performed under general anesthesia in all "human" patients who have any abdominal and perirectal sensation. If electroejaculation were not painful, general anesthesia would not be required for the "procedure" to be carried out on humans! 

Electroejaculation of bulls on all farms is banned in Sweden and Denmark. (yes, even factory farms - fancy that!)

This practise must be banned from being any part of Organic Farming, as well as Conventional Farming before consumers totally revolt and DEMAND INVITRO food!  Some recent comments about electroejaculation of Canadian farm animals:

Ask your Regulators to ban this barbaric practise now! In the meantime, please ask your organic food suppliers to refuse to be part of this barbarism!
